Carbonate magnesium, magnesium carbonate, magnesite.
The minerals magnesite and dolomite are used to produce magnesium and basic refractory bricks. MgCO3 is also used in fire-proof compounds and extinguishers, cosmetics and dentifrices. Other applications are filler material, smoke suppressant in plastics, reinforcing agent in neoprene rubber, as a drying agent, laxative and to retain color in food. Additionally, the high purity magnesium carbon is used as an antacid and as an additive for table salt, to drain better. Magnesium carbonate, more commonly known as chalk, is used to dry hands in climbing, gymnastics and weightlifting.
